City cardiologists have come out strongly against chelation therapy promoted by some practitioners and said that there was absolutely no evidence of it being a viable alternative to coronary bypass surgery and angioplasty. The therapy involves a series of intravenous infusions of the organic chemical ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) and various other substances to cure ailments.
Some practitioners advertise chelation therapy as a cure for cardiovascular disease, autism, and many other diseases. However, cardiologists warned that it has not been proven to effectively treat multiple blocks.
Scientifically speaking, chelation has been found to be of use only in certain cases of heavy metal poisoning. "The American College of Cardiology has clearly stated that it has no scientific basis," says Dr J. Shiv Kumar, an interventional cardiologist of Hrudayam Clinic. "It is being practised in parts of North India where people are reluctant to undergo a bypass. But it is not scientifically proven."
While chelation therapy treats arterial blocks as impurities that can be leeched out, Dr Kumar pointed out that blocks occur because of fat deposits in the internal layers of the arteries and also fibrous deposits.
"They cannot be termed either an infection or impurity though they can trigger infection," he said. "They can be cleared mechanically either by balloon angioplasty or by-pass surgery with a graft." However, Dr Dhananjay Shah of Malad in Mumbai, who practises chelation therapy, insists it was legitimate. "I am the member of the American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM) and have been undertaking this therapy for the past eight years," he says. "A mixture of drugs is infused intravenously. It takes one hour 20 minutes and can be used to remove blocks."
He added that chelation therapy was effective in treating bad cholesterol, heavy metal poisoning and fibrosis. "It is a holistic approach and can be used for several ailments including diabetes," he said. "The number of dosages depends on age, severity of disease and the patient's habits," says the doctor who claims to have treated a patient with a cancerous tumour in the brain. "She had undergone both chemotherapy and radiotherapy when she approached me. I treat her using chelation therapy in which each sitting costs Rs 2,500. Now she's leading a perfectly normal life thanks to chelation therapy," says Dr Shah. He added that the therapy is also useful in treating impotence.
The ACAM, which promotes chelation therapy, says the hardened arteries can be softened if the calcium is removed. "Chelation therapy has not yet been proven in clinical trials," says Dr A. Ravikanth, consultant cardiologist of Yashoda Hospital. "There is no scientific data available either."
The American Heart Association's Clinical Science Committee has reviewed the available literature on the use of chelation (EDTA) in the treatment of arteriosclerotic heart or blood vessel disease and found no scientific evidence to demonstrate any benefit. It also warned that this unproven treatment may deprive patients of the well-established benefits of many proven methods
I am Dr Sibia and am practicing Chelation Therapy in Ludhiana since 1994 with good results. I was trained in the therapy at Arterial Disease Clinic, UK and was impressed by their results. There are over 2000 doctors practicing the therapy in USA and many more in several other countries. I will say that Chelation therapy is a patient proven treatment but ther are yet not adequate controlled trials for it to find place in text books. It should be given a trial after after properly informing the patients and with proper follow-up.

Thank you, for sharing the information. One thing is for sure that the "Mafia's in Medicine business" will not allow this kind of therapies to flourish. A lot of alternative medicine theories are there with "WHO" waiting for certification, and about America, how old are they in Research; a few hundred years...but we have at least 2500 years of written evidence about medicine. One Dr. Dhani Ram Barua, from Assam, who invented the component "Barua's Heart" as the artificial valve used in By-Pass surgery is also Researching our ancient medicines for heart cure.
ReplyDeleteSo, only one request, If you find it true go for it.
I am professionally qualified and well read, well connected, 44 yrs male, based in New Delhi and was diagnosed with Coronary Artery Disease in June 2011. My Doc a leading Cardiologist of Escorts hospital ruled out angioplasty and advised medicinal management. In 2012 i had an angiography and was again advised Medicinal Management.
ReplyDeleteIn 2013, i felt unwell and went to a different very reputed pvt. hospital in the wee hours of the morning and a different doctor (a retd HOD from a leading Govt.Hospital in his late 50's or early 60's - a known face in whos who of cardiology in India) immediately arrived and performed Angiography and then after 10 mins into the procedure he went outside the OT and told my wife that my blockages were serious and life-threatening and that he would have to perform angioplasty and if i was covered in Insurance and if so for what amount.....my wife permitted and he placed 3 stents in my arteries.
After discharge from hospital i approached many leading cardiologists across India for a second opinion, all of whom on condition of anonymity said that the angioplasty-stenting wasnt really that neccesary in my case but its ok now that it is done.
Most interventional cardiologists earn almost 50% moneyback commision on the cost of the stents (Which In my case was Rs1,30,000=00 each - meaning that the doc made a clean 1,95,000=00) in addition to their procedure fee and the hospital too gets a small percentage in addition to room rent and nursing and OT chgs.
The biggest joke - there is no reduction in my medicinal intake post angioplasty.
Therapies such as chelation therapy are pushed to the background since they threaten such huge earnings of the doctors.
A friend with a similar case as mine underwent chelation therapy near Nashik in Maharashtra and is healthier and happier than me.
Even if a person undergoes 30 sittings of Intra Venous chelation Therapy @ 2000/= each ....the doctors make very little money and fewer post procedure medication is required.
I leave the rest for the reader to decide...
I am contactable on amitkumar@iycworld.net.....
I agree with Dipanjul when he talks about the Mafia's' of the medical business who will try their utmost to rubbish claims of non conventional medicine. If the chelation procedure is non invasive and cheaper and more comfortable I don't see why patients should not go in for it. There are hundreds of non conventional treatments that have existed and being discovered so we have far better choices than quick fix methods that are expensive and often not guaranteed to cure the root cause of a medical problem.
ReplyDeletechelation therapy has proven its beneficial effect in TACT trial done by national institute of health, usa.
ReplyDeletechelation therapy can avoid bypass surgery and angioplasty.
only by protocol along with medicines and life style changes ,it has to be given by trained doctor.
chelation theray is 300 times safer then bypass surgery and it has no chance of stent thrombosis or stent reblockages-stenosis.
chelation therapy has proven its safety and its best artery clearence therapy and improve blood flow.
