Aggressive wild animals of dog family including hyenas, wild dogs and wolves are testing
city limits again and again. They struck at Choudariguda near Shamshabad on Saturday
night killing calves leading to panic in the area. Locals are claiming that they are
leopard attacks and foresters are maintaining that they are hyenas or wild wolves or
Asiatic wild dogs also known as dholes. Forest officials who came to a conclusion that
they are canidae family not felidae family (cat family) but mystery over which animal is
still continuing.
Shamshabad forest range officer Mr. Hari Mohan Reddy says,”we have been receiving
complaints from the residents surrounding Shamshabad that they have spotted leopard. Our
expert tiger trackers of Srisailam have come here recently and ruled out the movement of
leopard. They are chenchu tribals who can easily find it. We have also set up traps for
the leopard with a stray dog and goat. The bait remained alive for several days. If it is
a leopard it would have gone for the stray dog. Even the pug marks are different. We
strongly believe they are wild dogs as they attack from behind. The nature of injury are
also resembling that of wild dog,”
Locals have a different story to tell. Residents of a neighbourhood near Shamshabad are
complaining that the foresters are not doing enough to protect them and their livestock
from aggressive wild animals straying off from the nearby shrub forests.
Mr. M Narendar a resident Choudariguda “they are 100 per leopards. We have spotted them.
Forest officials are not taking any measures. We are going to stage protest at
collectorate soon. They have killed at least to 15 to 20 calves. We were told that they
can even kill and drag infant babies sleeping in the house. The situation is alarming in
Jukal and Choudariguda village. We are terrified. We are requesting electricity
department to stop power cuts during nights,” He added there lot of superstitions
surrounding the movement of these wild animals.
Experts from Nehru Zoological park says the disturbances in city surrounding forest is
leading to the situation and their analysis is still deepening the mystery.
Nehru Zoological park curator Mr. A Shankaran ‘We have been getting reports on the
movements of hyenas in Shamshabad, Mamidipally and hitech city area for the past few
years. These areas are known habitats for hyenas. By all probability they could be hyena
attacks. The Second possibility could be wild wolves. But wild dogs we have doubts as
they are shy animals and move in groups in 20 to 30s. They live in dense forest. And wild
dogs move in packs and they There is no dense forest near this year. Hyenas, wolves and
wild dogs(dholes) belong to wild family of dogs,”
Zoo parks director Mr Mallikarjun said "The hyenas or wolves or dholes never used to come
in the human settlement. It may be disturbances in their habitat which make them come
down here.
