Painting a thorny picture of the ground situation in Andhra Pradesh’s Capital Region, Singapore planners observed that Vijayawada is facing heavy traffic congestion and pollution due to inadequate roads and said that Amaravati may face the same problems.
“With the new capital city located near Vijayawada there is a very high possibility of the same problems developing in the capital city even before it is developed. Major redevelopment strategies have to be implemented in the surrounding areas.
There is heavy traffic congestion due to inadequate lane capacity, poor roads and the under funding of road maintenance.
The expansion of NHs and roads are expected to solve traffic problems. However, there is a need to study projected demand in the new capital,” the planners said.
They said that even the rail junction is congested and the airport has no land to expand. In the perspective plan for the capital the Singapore experts said that there was no sewage system in villages of the capital city and that people defecate openly in canals. The planners also expressed concerns over the encroachments of hills.
“Due to the absence of a sewage system the villages have open drains and this later enters the river. Solid waste is dumped in canals passing through cites. People wash clothes and defecate in canals resulting in a polluted water system. The hills have steep slopes. Encroachment and erosion are a major environmental issue,” the planners said in the report.
