For every minute a crash and every 3.7 minutes a death is reported in
the country due to road mishaps with AP being one of the top states. Ministry of Road
transport and Highways says 1.4 lakh deaths including 15,117 in AP are reported in the
country in a year in the road accidents.
Following the alarming situation World Health Organisation along with Centre for Media
Studies will be holding a meet and workshop in the city on December 18.
CMS regional office General manager Ms Anita Medasani says.”In 2011 around 1.42 lakh were
killed and 5.11 lakh were injured in road accidents and most of the victims are aged 15
to 29 years,”
In Andhra Pradesh in 2011 a total of 42880 cases of Road Accidents were registered till
the end of December and 15,117 persons died due to accidents and 55831 got injured.
Cyberabad police commissionarate limits registered highest number of Road Accident cases
3746 followed by Hyderabad City 2745 and Nalgonda 2221.
According to WHO highest 27.4 per cent of fatalities are resulted from crashes involving
trucks, tempos, tractors and others heavy vehicles followed by two wheelers 19.2 per cent
and then cars, jeeps and taxis around 17.6 per cent.
Road accident deaths will be a huge burden for the country as it along with non
communicable diseases like cancer and heart diseases will comprise 56 per cent of
projected 67 million deaths by 2030.
